Robin cultivates many plants and knows much about stones and gems. He is well versed in experimental living and thinking, having applied much to his own life. Robin was trained as a classical musician, playing the oboe rigorously from childhood. One natural rebellion after another sent him in an opposing direction as he and a few local boys from Bucks County, PA began jamming together and later formed the Holy Modal Rounders. Michael had been turning up at the same gatherings as Robin and the two hitched a bond. Robin recalls the party during which Michael came up with “The Werewolf”—they were on a New York City stint when Michael wailed it out into the night and would have forgotten the whole thing had Robin not asked to hear it again on the ride back home the next day. Both also tell stories of life at the Pennsylvania Cook (as in “kook”) Camp, where they resided in teepees and hammocks while making jaunts to the local gig scene. Robin and Michael’s sister Jeanne were married for some time and had their own family. Robin’s still at it, making music again after a period of intentional nothingness as he holds down his self-described cave dwelling in Oregon. Susannah’s father Steve Morse would also like us to point out that Robin remains responsible for the floor-stomping, hat-throwing Rounders sensation “Euphoria.” Our visit with Rube the Card shed light on all manner of topics and when that charmer showed up at a gig in Portland a few days later, he was still barefoot. |
