In a group of young musicians closely connected to Michael, Devendra stands out as having departed from the periphery. Having made eight studio albums and many collaborations and singles, he tours and plays worldwide on the highest level of exposure. He has also played with Vetiver. Despite, or perhaps because of this success, he has taken inspiration from Michael’s path and speaks of his example as a light to follow amid concerns of staying true. It was our pleasure to catch some of what Devendra feels about Michael in Northern CA during a fall time recording retreat in 2009. Devendra and Andy Cabic have worked on several projects jointly, including the creating of their record label, Gnomonsong, which released Ancestral Swamp by Michael Hurley in 2007. He’s clearly shown his support of Michael’s work and repeatedly becomes excited—hands waving and eyes wide—when introducing others to his music. “Every song, I mean every song is good.” |
