Someday it will be revealed what the deal is with Nevada City and its ability to produce such lovely musicians. Perhaps it’s a conspiracy, or maybe the water. Alela Diane is one such wonderful songwriter and performer who, in the time since catching her play with Michael in a 2008 L. A. show at McCabe’s, has winged her way around the world with several finely made albums and a swelling number of enthusiasts here and in Europe. While living in Portland, Oregon, Alela met Michael Hurley at a show and handed him her CD. Thus a friendship was generated, and collaboration between Alela and her “favorite folk legend.” Michael and Alela performed a number of shows together and recorded a duet, “Age Old Blue” for her 2009 album To Be Still. Alela wrote the song after listening to family history from her grandmother about her Canadian great-grandfather, a soldier. Singing it together, both Michael and Alela convey a sense of honor in joining their voices through the aching, deep passages of the song, reflecting a passing of musical inspiration and inheritance from Michael’s generation to Alela’s own. Alela has a half dozen releases now and has continued to create work and tour with her father and husband as Alela Diane & Wild Divine. Enjoy: www.aleladiane.com |
